Health Testing

Responsible breeding begins before a pairing is ever planned. Health testing helps us make informed decisions for our dogs, our breed, and the families who may one day welcome a Magnolia Heritage Tibetan Mastiff.

Why we test

Health testing is part of preservation.

Health testing does not guarantee a perfect dog or a perfect litter. It does, however, give breeders better information before making breeding decisions. For a large guardian breed like the Tibetan Mastiff, those decisions should be made carefully, transparently, and with long-term breed health in mind.

Magnolia Heritage looks at health, temperament, structure, pedigree, and breed type together. Testing is one important piece of that larger responsibility.

Our guiding standard

We use breed-club and OFA guidance as a foundation, including recommended screening for hips, elbows, eyes, and thyroid before breeding.

Testing results and timing will be shared as each dog reaches the appropriate age and evaluation stage.

What we are looking for

Core health areas for Tibetan Mastiffs

The American Tibetan Mastiff Association health statement recommends testing dogs and bitches prior to breeding for hips, elbows, eyes, and thyroid. These are the core areas we will use as the foundation of our health-testing program.

Hips

Hip evaluation helps screen for hip dysplasia and overall hip quality. The ATMA health statement references OFA hip ratings of excellent, good, or fair, or PennHIP results no greater than the average for large-breed dogs.

Elbows

Elbow evaluation helps screen for elbow dysplasia. The ATMA health statement recommends OFA normal elbows prior to breeding.

Eyes

Eye evaluation helps screen for eye anomalies and eyelid conditions such as entropion and ectropion. The ATMA health statement calls for a biannual eye exam with OFA clear results.

Thyroid

Thyroid evaluation helps screen for thyroid disease, including hypothyroidism. The ATMA health statement recommends an annual complete thyroid panel.

When we test

Testing must match the age and purpose of the dog.

Some evaluations are final only after a dog reaches the appropriate age. Young dogs may have preliminary information, while final breeding decisions should wait for the appropriate evaluations and maturity.

As our younger dogs mature, this page will be updated with the testing completed, the timing of planned evaluations, and links to public results when available.

How we test

Testing may include radiographs submitted for hip and elbow evaluation, ophthalmologist eye exams, and laboratory thyroid panels. Results may be recorded with OFA or other recognized health databases as appropriate for the evaluation.

Public databases matter because they allow breeders, puppy buyers, and other preservation-minded programs to verify results and make better-informed decisions.

Transparency

Health information should be clear, not hidden.

Magnolia Heritage will continue building this page as testing is completed. Our goal is to present health information in a way that is easy for puppy families to understand, while still respecting the seriousness of breeding decisions.

Health testing is one part of responsible breeding. Temperament, structure, breed type, pedigree, daily care, and honest puppy placement all matter as well.
